A heart warming tale by: SoftServe

In the small village of Greenville, Maine, William, and his brother, Brendon, along with their families were very close. Their families were together all the time. In the summer they would get together for picnics and soccer games and in the winter they would go ice skating and sledding everyday. They would have play dates for the kids during the week. On the weekends the brothers and their families would be together from morning until night for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Holidays were extra special to them they spent Christmas, Easter, and every holiday they could think of, together.

William was the older brother. He always knew what to do in every situation especially when their parents left him in charge of something. He was bossy, but always got the job done. A determined man, he always worked hard to succeed. Brendon was more of a shy guy he didn’t say much but always worked hard.

William went to Harvard to be an accountant, were he meet his wife Sarah. Her books fell and he helped her pick them up and as soon as they looked each other in the eyes they fell in love. During their third year of college they got married.

Brendon, his brother, went to Yale to become a teacher. He worked really hard in school and succeeds. Brendon was the smartest student in his class. He completed college two years earlier than the rest of his class.

Their parents made it a big deal to do well in school because they had to work really hard all of their lives just to survive they didn’t want their boys to have to work as hard as they did. Two years little after Brendon graduated he meet his wife, Bella. At the age of 35 he had three children, Lily, Joseph, and Ella. William and Sarah were both 39 and already had four children Michael, Clara, Sophia, and Thomas. Sarah loved children, and enjoyed caring for Brendon and Bella’s children while they both worked.

The William and Brendon enjoyed visiting their parents even though they lived 300 miles away. They would load the boys in Brendon’s van and the girls in William’s van and off they would go. It was fun to share with their children what it was like growing up in the country with their parents. Every time they kids went to their grandma’s and grandpa’s house they would tell them the best stories ever. She would tell stories of how their family came over from Italy to America. She told the boys how their parents meet on a boat on their journey to America. Both families chose to settle next door to each other. The boy’s grandfathers were carpenters and built the house they grew up and their parents got married and had William and Brendon a couple years later.

This trip home however was unpleasant. William and Brendon’s parents were in a car accident and killed by a drunk driver. The boys were devastated that their parents would never be able to see their grandkids get married, have their own kids, learn how to ride a bike ,and tons of other things. They loved their parents so much. As the brothers were preparing for the funeral they thought of all of the good times they had in that old country house. How the floor creak, the doors would get stuck and they would help their dad fix because they did everything like their dad when they were very little. After the funeral the boys and their families returned home.

As the months went by the brothers realized that they had to go home, and sort through their parents things and find out if they are going to keep the house. It was time to decide what to do with the house they grew up in. William and Brendon pack a bag and headed home for the weekend.

When they arrived Friday night it was very late. William woke up early and took charge as always. “Brendon why don’t you start in the basement? I will start in the attic, and we can meet somewhere in the middle.”

“That’s fine with me. I just want to get this over with”, said Brendon.

The two boys set off in different directions, and began to sort. As much as the boys didn’t want to do this they knew it had to be done. William found many treasures and reminders of their parent’s long journey to America. He even found his Great grandmother journal. Brendon came across the tools of his Grandfathers, he and his brother’s baseball gloves, and a box of very old maps of Italy. He was surprised when he found the maps. He remembered his mother telling stories of their family bringing over very old documents from the 1600’s with them. Their parents knew these documents were very valuable because they were over 350 years old or so. He set the maps aside and continued to work. The time went by so fast that before they realized the day was gone. William and Brendon brought their finds to the den, and ordered a pizza and opened a bottle of their grandfathers’ famous wine. Brendon showed William the maps and documents he found and suggested they give them to their sons. William thought that was a great idea. William told Brendon of the journal he had found. The boys looked at it, but couldn’t read Italian so they set it aside and continued to share what they had found.

The next day the boys worked until late afternoon and then head for Greenville. They were really tired when they reach home so the brothers just went to bed.

Several weeks passed and Sarah yelled to William “What are you going to do with these boxes from home?”

“I guess I will call Brendon and see if Bella and he would like to come over for a picnic. And we can go threw them save what we want and get rid of the rest.”

“That sounds like a good idea.” Brendon and Bella arrived and the four of them sat down with a bottle of Great grandpas’ wine. They started to go though the boxes. Bella came across the journal. She tried to read it however it had been years since she had study Italian. She could make out some of this however it wasn’t making much since. She had made out enough to know that the maps the brothers found were very important. Sarah and Bella convinced the boys to take the journal and maps to a professor at Yale that was a good friend of Brendon.

Professor Cantabonia had taught Italian at Yale for 35 years. She could read and speak it well. “Brendon how long has it been? 5, 6 years!”

“Oh Professor Cantabonia thank you so much for seeing me.”

“Please, Brendon anything for you, and just so you know you can call me Rose, I was so sorry to hear about your parents. How is your William doing?” she asked.

“He is doing well. We found this journal and these maps in our parents’ house Bella couldn’t understand only parts of this and thought maybe you could help us to understand what these were all about.”

“I would love to. Let’s see what we have here. Brandon this is going to take some time could a keep these for a week or so?” Rose told Brendon.

“Sure, Rose, take your time there is no hurry. They have been in the attic for all these years what a few weeks.”

“As soon as I’ve found anything I will give you a call.”Brendon yelled on his way out the door.

The next day the phone rang and Bella picked it up and said, “Hello.”

“Bella, this is Rose is Brendon there?” Rosa said exactly

“Yes, just a minute, and I will get him.”

“Rose, that was quick it hasn’t even been two days.” Brendon said confused.

“Well once I started reading I couldn’t stop. Your grandmother was quite a writer. Her journal read like a novel. I couldn’t put it down. I haven’t slept because I could stop putting the pieces of this terrific puzzle together. Is there any way that if I came up to Maine I could meet with William and you I think I should share what I found with both of you together.”Rose asked.

“Sure, how about this weekend?” Brendon told her

“Well I was hoping that tomorrow would be better if that’s ok with the two of you?”

“Ok. Is there something wrong?”

“Oh no just the opposite. Something is great and I know you are going to love it.” Rose said

“We’ll see you tomorrow.”

Brendon called William and told him about the call from Rose and invited him and Sarah over for dinner the next night. Wednesday came and so did Rose.

“Gentlemen your parents never realized the value of the papers they posed. Your Great grandparents own the largest vineyard in Italy. Your grandmothers were best friends and when your father’s parents decided to come to America. Your mother’s mother was sad that her best friend was leaving so your grandfather tired to sell his vineyard. They didn’t have any money to start over with here in America. Your father’s parents gave them some of their land here to build a house. Your Grandfather was so thankful he split His land in Italy and gave half to your grandfather. The two families never went back. I did some research and found out your family still own the land.”

“WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?” exclaimed William?

“Oh, Dear God!” said Sarah.

“That’s right you own the biggest vineyard in all of Italy.” Rose exclaimed.

As soon as the brothers came back from their trip to Italy, they realized that if they sold the vineyard they would be putting a lot of people out of Jobs. So the brother decided to keep the vineyard and run like a family business, the way it should have been. Once William and Brendon the business was strong and giving them a good income they decide to buy their parents house and a house in Italy. As they were a year in the business they found a great deal of money left from when their parent’s parents run the business. Later that year they got an award for the best wine in Italy.

Right now the boys are very rich and currently send all their kids to college. They have also been receiving tons of awards for their fabulous wine.
